Pornography can be a very touchy area (no pun intended). Many people have quite strong opinions and beliefs about nudity and sexuality, so it’s understandable why they might react strongly to it.

Having said that, there is a form of pornography that is far more widely accepted, and, arguably, way more damaging. Chances are you’re consuming it every day (you pervert!). It’s called…

THE NEWS

I’ve previously expressed my thoughts about the “news”. I’ve mentioned how it makes you stupid, and how it almost never presents any information that is actionable (let alone actually useful).

But the problem with the news goes much deeper than that.

Ultimately, the news seems to take a special delight and satisfaction in broadcasting images of death, destruction, and suffering.

It’s like some sort of morbid fetish, and people happily consume it.

Hardly anyone bats an eyelid at seeing death on the news, yet many of those same people will petition governments and television networks if someone flashes a nipple (let alone a dong…) on TV.

But I digress.

A recent example

Take the most recent, catastrophic news story – the Japanese earthquake, tsunami, and subsequent nuclear meltdown.

The moment this story broke, you could just hear the news services collectively salivating.

Here was the perfect story for them to exploit. It has it all. Natural disaster of epic proportions, death, stories of survival, heartbreak, nuclear disaster, etc.

It’s like one giant Roland Emmerich movie – but in real life.

So, naturally, it’s time for saturation coverage across the media – even if it means replaying the same handful of clips over and over and over…

And for what actual reason?

What ultimate purpose is this all serving?

Sure, it initially informs us that a disaster has occurred. But once we know that, further coverage does nothing. It doesn’t provide any actionable information, and it doesn’t help the people whose lives are being affected.

It doesn’t even help the people watching it unfold on television (often it even harms them psychologically).

Isn’t that one of the arguments against pornography in general? That it can be psychologically damaging to some people?

Surely the above types of images are WAY more harmful, and they’re consumed by the masses on a daily basis (even hourly sometimes…).

It’s sheer depravity.

It’s like the news relishes flashing emotive images such as kids’ toys lying in the ruins, half-burnt family photos, and other images of death and destruction.

The news seems to derive some sort of sick pleasure from this, and it exploits people’s guilt about not keeping themselves regularly “informed” of the latest “developments”.

There’s no reason you should feel guilty about not consuming this crap.

We may not be able to shut down this monster called “news”, but we can do the next best thing:

Turn off the “news porn”.

Stop watching it.

Stop listening to it.

Stop reading it.

Then, do one of two things: make a donation to help those who are suffering (interesting how the news rarely encourages that…), and/or get on with your life and make the world around you a better place instead.

Oh, and if someone flashes a nipple on TV … relax. It’s just a nipple.
